Food Bank braces for possible effects of food stamp cuts

FARGO (KFGO-AM) - The Fargo-based Great Plains Food Bank is waiting to see the effects of a substantial reduction in the food stamp program. Beginning Friday, the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be trimmed by about $5 billion.

Great Plains Food Bank Marketing Director Marcia Paulson says if the effects of the cuts are widespread, more people will likely show up at local food pantries seeking help.

The government says the reductions are equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three.

The Great Plains food bank supplies about 260 pantries, soup kitchens and emergency shelters in North Dakota and Minnesota.
