On the eve of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of Nirvana , Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic appeared on The Tonight Show Wednesday night.

Novoselic said the induction ceremony in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday night will be "bittersweet" because they won't be able to share it with their late bandmate, Kurt Cobain . However, he added, "It's a good way to remember him."

Host Jimmy Fallon asked Novoselic what Cobain was like when they attended high school together. Novoselic recalled that Cobain was a weird kid just like he was, "and we thought the world was weird, so we gravitated toward each other. And we loved punk rock music and everybody else hated punk rock music."

Grohl, who didn't join Nirvana as their drummer until after the release of the band's 1989 debut album, Bleach , shared an amusing story from their early touring days. He said that during one tour, Cobain repeatedly chopped at his drums, creating holes that diluted its sound. Because he wanted a new set, Grohl asked Cobain to destroy the drums at the end of a concert in Chicago. The bandmates hacked at the drums for a half-hour, but it turned out Grohl couldn't pick up new drums at a store the next day, as planned, because it was closed.

Grohl and Novoselic also discussed their collaboration with Paul McCartney on the Grammy-winning song "Cut Me Some Slack." Grohl marveled, "Sometimes you forget that he can be the most badass bass player you've ever seen in your entire life. And he just wants to jam."

Nirvana is joined in the Rock Hall's class of 2014 by KISS , Daryl Hall and John Oates , Linda Ronstadt , Cat Stevens and Peter Gabriel .
