STANLEY, N.D. (AP) -- The Mountrail County Sheriff's Office is trying to track down the owners of stolen items recovered during a two-year investigation into thefts in four counties and the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
Sheriff Ken Halvorson says that hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of items were recovered. Deputy Tim Helmer says about 80 percent of the thefts occurred at oil field sites, in Mountrail, McKenzie, Burleigh and Ward counties and on the reservation.
Some items have been returned to owners. Halvorson says he doesn't know how much longer his office can store the remaining items before it has to auction them off to create space.
New Town resident Daniel Gay pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced in March to serve two years in prison.
