SD airport wants help from hunters to cull geese

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City Regional Airport officials hope to enlist hunters in an effort to curb rising numbers of migrating Canada geese which pose an increasing threat to aircraft.

State wildlife officials have been asked to consider a special hunting season for geese that tend to flock near the airport during certain times of the year.

Airport deputy director Pete Girtz says the number of geese flocking to the area in late fall and early spring has increased from hundreds to thousands in the past several years.

The airport already uses timer-controlled cannons, horn blasts from vehicle loudspeakers and hand-held cap-guns to scare away birds.

Girtz says neighboring farm fields, and waterways make prime feeding and roosting stops for geese.
