North Dakota official: inmate who escaped was `no real threat'

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A North Dakota official says no announcement was made regarding the inmate who escaped a corrections facility last week because he was not considered a public threat.

Thirty-six-year-old Michael Engst was arrested in Breckenridge, Minnesota, after he walked away Wednesday from the low-risk, minimum-security Missouri River Correctional Center in Bismarck.

Corrections officials alerted law enforcement in both states about the escapee, but did not notify the public.

Tim Tausend is the spokesman for the North Dakota Department of Corrections. He says Engst ''posed no real threat to the public'' as his case consisted primarily of drug offenses.

Engst was sentenced on May 27 to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to Class C felony theft of property.
