You’d have to be living that proverbial cave to have not heard of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by now. It’s pretty simple: you use social media to challenge someone to dump a bucket of icewater over their head, or donate $100 to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Most folks wind up doing both, then challenge someone else. The latest rock wet-heads for the cause? Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam .
McCready actually issued the initial challenge, daring his bandmates last Friday, as well as Duff McKagan and Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard . Vedder was the first to respond, dousing himself Saturday and then challenging Bruce Springsteen and actor pal Tim Robbins . No word yet on any subsequent responses.
The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a tremendous success so far. The ALS Association says donations between July 29 and August 18 are up a whopping 766 percent from the same period last year. That translates into an increase from $1.8 million during those three weeks in 2013, to $15.6 million as of today.
