GOPers who backed gay marriage face consequences

ALBERTVILLE, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota lawmakers who took tough votes to legalize gay marriage are starting to find out if they will face consequences with election season heating up. Four House Republicans broke from their party's traditional stand to support gay marriage.

Now one, David FitzSimmons of Albertville, has an endorsement challenge at his precinct convention Saturday. Eric Lucero, a Dayton city councilman, says FitzSimmons can't be trusted.

FitzSimmons says he had a chance to put more religious protections in a bill the Democratic majority was going to pass either way, but the cost was his vote for the bill. FitzSimmons says he has no regrets. So far the other two House Republicans seeking re-election are not challenged for endorsement.

But the issue is likely to rear its head again between now and November.
