MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - A longtime high-ranking Cass County official is facing domestic assault charges in Moorhead.
Cass County Administrator Keith Berndt has been charged with two counts of fifth-degree domestic assault. A police report obtained by KFGO News says the assault happened at Berndt's Moorhead home earlier this month.
Lt. Tory Jacobson says the alleged victim is a minor. Jacobson says police found out about the incident when a mandated reporter contacted a school resource officer.
The investigation remains open. Berndt has not been arrested, or taken into custody.
Defense attorney Lisa Borgen tells KFGO News that Berndt learned about the charges when he received a ticket in the mail. Borgen says Berndt plans to plead "not guilty" because an assault never occurred.
Berndt served as Cass County Engineer for 19 years before he was promoted to county administrator.
