On Thursday, Kurt Cobain 's hometown of Aberdeen, Washington, will commemorate the achievements of the late Nirvana frontman.

The city's mayor, Bill Simpson , has declared Thursday to be "Kurt Cobain Day," coinciding with what would have been the musician's 47th birthday.

Simpson tells ABC News Radio that some Aberdeen parents are refusing to take part in the day's festivities because, they argue, Kurt "was a druggie and I don't want my kids to be druggies."

However, Simpson says the intention is to celebrate Kurt's contributions to the music world. He says, "When Paul McCartney tells people that Kurt Cobain was a genius, I believe it."

An event will be held at the Aberdeen Museum of History, when a statue of Kurt will be unveiled. In addition, his old guitar teacher will join other speakers in sharing their memories of Kurt, who committed suicide at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994.

Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April.
