30 Seconds to Mars ’ recently-released documentary, Artifact , gives fans an inside look at the band’s legal battle with record label EMI after being slapped with a $30 million lawsuit when the group tried to leave the label in 2007. Frontman Jared Leto says the band is usually shy about sharing their personal lives, but he felt it was important to shine a light on the band’s legal troubles.

“I have been in front of the camera quite a bit in my life, but never quite in this way,” he tells ABC News Radio. “It’s the most revealing and personal thing I’ve ever done probably, and we certainly don’t make a habit of that. We felt it was important to pull back the curtain, and share our lives as we were battling for everything that we had worked so hard for.”

While Leto adds the aftermath of the fight with EMI has given the band a bit more freedom in how they conduct their business, there is still more room to grow. “I feel like we always had creative freedom, we didn’t necessarily have contractual and business fairness, so I think that we moved to a better place,” he explains. “It’s more progress, not perfection.”

Artifact is now available on iTunes, and the flick will be screened in select theaters around the globe in the coming weeks. The next U.S. showings of the documentary will take place at New Beverly Cinema in Hollywood, CA, on Thursday, and at Angelika in New York City on February 12.
