MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- Residents of the eastern South Dakota city of Madison can once again use tap water for such things as showering and doing laundry, but they still can't drink it without boiling it first.

Officials are awaiting test results from water samples before declaring the water safe to drink.

The city's 6,500 residents were told to stop using water late Wednesday when a concrete-and-dirt roof collapsed into an underground well that feeds the city's water towers, contaminating the water. Schools canceled classes Thursday, and bottled water was trucked into town as crews worked to clean up the mess and restore water service.

Mayor Roy Lindsay says the water should be declared safe to drink late Friday.
