West Nile surveillance underway in North Dakota

BISMARCK (KFGO-AM) -- The North Dakota State Department of Health has started its annual surveillance program to watch for signs of West Nile Virus.

Health Department Epidemiologist Alicia Lepp says there were two deaths last year, and 127 others were sickened by the virus carried by mosquitoes.

Sick horses and dead birds are some of the indicators that the virus is present. Other surveillance activities include trapping and testing mosquitoes and watching for illness in humans.

The disease carrying mosquitoes usually don't show up until later in the summer.
