Bismarck downtown quiet zone moves ahead

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The Bismarck City Commission has approved a contract with BNSF Railway to design a quiet zone for three downtown rail crossings in the capital city.

The commission agreed to pay BNSF a design deposit of $60,000 on the condition that the city's engineering and legal staff find the contract acceptable.

The railway is expected to later hire its own contractor to build the rail crossing improvements. When the $3.6 million project is completed and meets federal approval, train whistles will no longer regularly sound in Bismarck's downtown district.
