Shaun White has a few talents: skateboarding, surfing, and winning multiple gold medals at the Winter Olympics for snowboarding chief among them. Turns out he also plays guitar. After receiving a bright yellow Fender in a snowboarding contest a while back, White took it with him on competitions and taught himself the instrument. Now he's in his first band, called Bad Things , and they're at SXSW this week to build a little buzz for their self-titled debut album, which was released a short time ago.
The band got their first big break when they were promoted to Main Stage on a Lollapalooza date last year, replacing a band that bailed at the last minute. White admits his name is a draw, but tells ABC News Radio that his sports fame is "a two-sided thing. I mean, you kind of get an extra listen, like "Oh, I'll check it out," but then it's the extra hard listen, and everybody's got their two cents on things. It's been nice and it's been tough but [I'm] so pleased by the reaction from people."
Bad Things' musical style runs the gamut from straight-up punk to a Beach Boys -esque California pop rock. Each of the five members -- including singer Davis LeDuke -- brings a different musical element to the table. White tells ABC News Radio "it's definitely a group project. I'm not the lead singer, I'm not in the forefront trying to do five-minute solos. It's the only thing that I do that really involves teamwork. Everything else is -- if I wake up and I try the tricks, and I do the workouts, then I can win the event or whatever. And [Bad Things] really doesn't come together until everyone gets in the same room. It's really collaborative."
