Tax-cut vote delayed as time crunch looms

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Final action on a tax break measure has been put off for another day.

The Minnesota Senate fell short Thursday in the needed votes to speed consideration of a $432 million proposal that also puts $150 million into a budget reserve account. Democrats who control the chamber needed GOP help, which didn't materialize.

Republican senators said they needed more time to review the bill, which differs from a version passed by the House that they were more comfortable with.

Gov. Mark Dayton's administration wants a tax package soon because some new deductions and credits could be available to people filing tax returns now. The administration says 300,000 or more people could qualify for at least one new exemption.

The package consumes almost half of the state's projected $1.2 billion surplus.
