Commission opposed to scope of battlefield study

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- County commissioners who represent an area in North Dakota near the historic Killdeer Mountain Battlefield say they are opposed to the scope of a study by historians.

Dunn County Commissioner Daryl Dukart says he made the motion to get the county in front of any potential impact to its ability to develop roads or do other public work in the 17,000-acre study area.

The program funded through the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program is being conducted over the next 18 months by the North Dakota State University Center for Heritage Renewal.

Center Director Tom Isern said the county's fears are ''quite unwarranted'' and the study is meant only to document how and where the Civil War-era battle occurred.
