KULM, N.D. (AP) -- Voters in Kulm appear to have approved a $5.5 million addition to the elementary school in the southeastern North Dakota town.

School Superintendent Tom Nitschke says unofficial results show about 81 percent of the 434 people who voted Tuesday were in favor of the project. The measure required 60 percent approval.

Results will be certified Monday.

Supporters said the expansion would improve school security, provide a better library and address issues with growth. Opponents wanted the existing school to be renovated instead.
