1 person dies after St. Paul house fire

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The St. Paul Fire Department says one person rescued from early morning fire has died of his injuries.

Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says the fire was reported about 5:45 a.m. Sunday. He says the entire second story was engulfed when firefighters arrived.

Seven people were inside sleeping when the fire started. Six got out on their own.

Zaccard says firefighters found one man unconscious in the house and performed CPR. He suffered serious smoke inhalation and was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition.

The department later announced that the victim died early Sunday afternoon, and the medical examiner will determine the cause.

Zaccard says all seven people were college age.

Investigators say the fire was caused by an unattended candle in a bedroom.
