FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Sen. Heidi Heitkamp wants the NFL to change the name of the Washington Redskins. Heitkamp is among a group of senators who co-signed a letter Wednesday that was sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The letter says the “Redskins” nickname is a “racial slur” that mocks Native American culture. The letter warns that the football team "is on the wrong side of history" and says "now is the time for the NFL to act."
Minn. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken also co-signed the letter.
The owner of the Redskins has said the name will never be changed.
