Hundreds turn out for ex-football player benefit

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) -- Hundreds of people have turned out for a benefit for a former Minnesota State, Mankato, football player critically injured in a downtown assault.

The family of Isaac Kolstad also used the Thursday event to thank the community for its support.

A YouCaring.com site set up for the family has raised more than $46,000.

The benefit was set up by Fastnel, Kolstad's employer.

Kolstad's younger brother, Abe Kolsad, says his brother's condition remains ``very critical.''

Prosecutors have charged 20-year-old former Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson of Mankato and 21-year-old Trevor Shelley of St. Peter with assault.

Shelley is accused of punching Kolstad and knocking him to the ground May 11th during an altercation in downtown Mankato's entertainment district as bars were closing.

Nelson then allegedly kicked Kolstad in the head.
