Design students' mission: Better astronaut glove

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A group of University of Minnesota students who study apparel are heading out on a big mission: helping design better gloves for America's astronauts.

Five students from the university's College of Design are bound this week for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. They will test new textiles for gloves.

Karen Fiegen, the project leader, says she started her design career with visions of pretty dresses, runways and red carpets. Now she's more concerned with coming up with a better design for gloves that currently can leave astronauts' hands sweaty, chafing and rash-prone.

The team is taking several different materials to test in an environment that simulates reduced gravity.
